So...this is exactly why my former dance troupe went to one dance competition, said

Followed by "never again." The one we went to didn't showcase dancing that was nearly so erotic, but the costumes were certainly on par. We rocked up in our homemade costumes and modern choreography...and while the judges saw us as a breath of fresh air, the audience was obviously...well, "confused" is a nice way to put it.

Granted, these girls have some serious skills (those fouette turns! Holy crap!), but they could be better put to use than this. Save this shit for the 18-plus set, please...or at least the 13-plus!! How old are these girls...8? 10?

PS - one of the regulars at Tea Junction looks like Gaius Baltar.

I've seen people talking about this and I can't bring myself to watch it.

Haha, I don't blame you.

I tried to watch it since everyone was saying "They're good dancers, wow!" and when they started doing that booty-shaking move I had to stop. It would have been tolerable had they modified a step or two and weren't wearing bikinis X( Little girls in bikinis are just damn adorable (ee tummies!), but not when they're doing a distinctly "adult" dance.

I don't get how everyone is all "PEDOS BAD!" and then have their kids doing sexy dances and coated in makeup for pageants and shows etc. The living-vicariously-through clouds judgement.

I have to admit, they are good. Holy crap.

This video was part of a huuuuge debate in a community I'm in. I guess I feel like their dance routine is unnecessarily sexual. I can see the awesome dance moves, but I feel like they wouldn't be getting so much attention had they performed a classical ballet or tap or something with the same amount of skill.

And I kind of feel disappointed that (in my opinion) the sexuality in the routine is making these little girls famous. Not exactly what I want my daughter to grow up thinking, you know?

I don't think they should have to stop, but I think people are saying they're AWESOME for a few of the wrong reasons.

I can't imagine that the choreographer was going for anything other than shock value, fueled by the "do anything to win" mentality. Dance competitions are hardcore. There was probably a cash or other big ticket prize involved, which helps to convince the parents that it's okay for their children to perform choreography/wear costumes intended for dancers over twice their age. Of course they wouldn't be getting as much attention otherwise...but the attention is what it's all about.

I mean...yes, their skills are bragworthy, but they could have showcased them just as well, even to the same song, by toning down the sexuality. Take out the hip/chest thrusts. That alone would've made it more bearable.

The sad thing is, the disillusionment the girls may suffer from...if not now, then later.

Oh the other hand, I've watched videos of young children crumping, which is a popular underground dance form...kind of hard to describe...but even though it invovles a lot of chest/hip isolations, it doesn't seem as vulgar. Not sure why.

Not because I'm a creeper who watches videos of kids dancing on a regular basis. Because there happened to be kids in the videos, haha.

I think crumping doesn't come across as so vulgar because it doesn't look like "look at me I'm sexy" but "look at me, I have good control over my body's movements". And usually doesn't involve a shit-ton of makeup and skanky bikinis.

Yeah. It's less about being an exhibitionist and more about dancing and having a good time with your friends.
May. 16th, 2010 05:46 pm (UTC)
ugh... thats... ugh. VERY WRONG.
May. 16th, 2010 11:49 pm (UTC)
I am enormously creeped out.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to applaud the children's dancing abilities or alert the authorities on their teachers' choice of sexually suggestive moves and attire. But I'm leaning heavily toward the latter... >.>
